An exciting community-wide project – aimed at upgrading the Halla John L Ó Súilleabháin community centre in Lios Póil – is ramping up, with all eyes now turning to raising the funds needed to make the locals’ grand vision a reality.
Halla John L remains a source of pride locally. When it was built nearly 50 years ago, the facility was among the best of its kind in Kerry, and between then and now, it has served its purpose to a tee.
It’s understandably showing its age nowadays, and very significant work is required at the Garraí na dTor building. Since 2019, the community has been proactive in this regard, and a survey saw almost 70 per cent of households in the parish provide their views on what a replenished hall should look like.
Feasibility and planning processes have followed. But some €350,000 now needs to be sourced over the next four years to have the refurbished hall open in late 2026 or early 2027, before the local GAA club, CLG Lios Póil, hosts the 2027 Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta on that year’s June bank holiday weekend.
We’ve already seen the launch of the club’s first major fundraiser, ‘Win 24k for 2024’, tickets for which will remain available through the remainder of 2023. On January 6, 2024, one lucky winner will scoop €24,000 to set them up for the year. Draws for smaller, monthly prices will also take place over the coming months – so the earlier you enter, the better chance you have to win a prize.
Tickets will be available from local businesses and sellers involved with the Ionad Pobal Lios Póil company set up to oversee the hall project. Tickets can also be purchased online at ionadliospoil.com
You can buy one ticket for €20; three for €50; or nine for €100.
This will be the first of several fundraisers that will take place in the coming years, but we as a community are keen to get our campaign off to a flying start.
